Faculty/Service Information:

The Faculty of Sport, Health and Applied Science is an internationally-recognised centre with established expertise and resources in running foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the areas of sport, health and applied sciences.

The Faculty is committed to offering students vocationally-relevant programmes of study with the highest academic standards. It has undergone rapid expansion in recent years, with the building of new facilities to support the programmes, and the employment of expert staff in the various fields of psychology, health and exercise science. All of the Faculty’s teaching and learning activity is underpinned by significant research and enterprise (consultancy/knowledge transfer) work, and staff are actively involved in professional associations.

Our well-established BSc Psychology programme was recently successfully revalidated as well as re-accredited with the BPS. In addition, the Faculty is actively developing its portfolio of psychology related programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. For 2019-2020 as well as the already highly successful BPS accredited BSc Psychology and MSc Applied Sport Psychology, we will be introducing the BSc Sport Psychology (BPS accredited). Subject to imminent validation, we will be launching the MSc Psychology of Mental Health during 2019-20 and are presently looking to develop BSc programmes in Counselling Psychology and a BSc Health and Mental Health for 2020-21.

Job Purpose:

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our Department to lead in the areas of mental health and health psychology. The successful candidate will lead on the new MSc Psychology of Mental Health and the BSc Health Psychology starting with taking the BSc Health Psychology through validation during 2019-20. The post holder is required to contribute to teaching on these programmes with particular emphasis and expertise within mental health. This is a permanent full-time position. The first 2 years (to end July 2021) will include a Programme Director role. After which the post will transfer to Senior Lecturer. The post holder will have the opportunity to reapply for programme leadership.

The successful candidate is expected to have a BPS GBC accredited first degree in Psychology or equivalent and a postgraduate qualification in Psychology. Experience working as a mental health practitioner is essential. A teaching qualification and/or Fellowship of the HEA is desirable. Experience of teaching and assessing in HE is essential and previous experience of programme leadership would be an advantage. Experience of work in applied settings and collaboration with external organisations is highly desirable as we seek to ensure our programmes respond to sector developments and imperatives. We are particularly keen to support innovation within programmes to enrich student experience. The successful candidate will demonstrate engagement with scholarship and research and ideally be able to evidence an ability to generate external income. Applications are encouraged from individuals wishing to be part of an ambitious Department with industry relevant programmes and contemporary approaches to teaching and learning in H.E.

There may be some flexibility regarding the role and we will consider fractional appointments and job share.

To discuss this or other aspects of the position please  contact the Head of Department, Dr Abbe Brady (email: abbe.brady@stmarys.ac.uk telephone 020 8240 4218).
