This is an exciting opportunity to join the technical team in the School of Physics at the University of Bristol. Working closely with the Technical Manager, who is also the School Safety Advisor, the Safety Officer will be responsible for the management and administration of all health and safety systems and protocols within the Schools. They will provide professional expertise and operational support to the Heads of School, School Safety Adviser, staff, students, contractors and any other persons working in or visiting the Schools.

Using their understanding of the safety requirements of office, laboratory and offsite activities, the successful applicant will work in partnership with the technical and administrative teams and Safety and Health services to provide working solutions to ensure compliance with safety legislation and University policy. They will take the lead in organising, monitoring, recording and training on a wide range of diverse activities, often with the need to come up with innovative and novel ideas to enable teaching and research to be carried out safely. Through this they will work to ensure a safe working environment for all who work both in the School, and off-site during remote working, actively promoting a culture of safe working.

The role holder must have an excellent working knowledge of health & safety legislation and practice, with significant experience of the practical application of safety in a laboratory environment, ideally in an academic setting. Knowledge of the field environment is desirable, however this can be gained while in post. They should already hold or be willing to work towards holding an appropriate professional safety qualification e.g. IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH Certificate (training will be supported once in post). Relevant qualifications at GCSE/A-Level, or NVQ, or equivalent level, and substantial work experience in a relevant role are required.
