Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research position in modelling chimpanzee distribution across Tanzania for a fixed term period of 12-months, with a possibility of a 1-2 year extension contingent on funding.

You will join the Arcus Foundation-funded project investigating chimpanzee conservation in western Tanzania, building density/distribution models for Tanzania chimpanzees and advising on chimpanzee survey design and data collection protocols for future surveys. Additional analyses based on camera trap and acoustic sensor data may also be required. There may be a fieldwork component to the position, but primary responsibilities are in data analyses and scientific paper writing.

You will work closely with a small team of LJMU-based team of PhD students doing related work, and also overseeing field-based teams in Tanzania.

Duties include collating and managing long-term monitoring data from genetic, acoustic, camera trap, and line-transects across Tanzania. Leading analyses into chimpanzee population size, distribution, and habitat use, create species distribution models and conduct trend analyses to assess change over time.

You will write research papers for peer-reviewed animal behaviour, primate, and conservation journals, as well as actively participate in applications for grant funding.

Informal enquiries may be made to Alex Piel, email: A.K.Piel@ljmu.ac.uk
