Department of Sociology and Social Policy

The Department of Sociology and Social Policy brings together scholars with an international profile in the area of sociology and social policy.  The Department offers teaching in Sociology; together with the Department of Economics contributes to courses in Social Policy; and starting in 2019-20, the Department will co-host the Health and Social Services Management stream with the Asia Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies.  The Department hosts a newly established international MA programme in Comparative Social Policy (IMCSP) and is planning to open another new MA programme.  The department has been successful in attracting MPhil and PhD students from around the world as well as Hong Kong PhD Fellows.  Applicants are advised to visit the departmental web site (http://www.LN.edu.hk/socsp/) and UG programme web site (http://www.LN.edu.hk/progs/ssprog/) for more information.

General Requirements

We are looking for active researchers who could contribute to the academic profile of the Department, supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and teach courses offered by the Department in the areas of sociology, social policy, public health and social services management.  The courses currently offered by the Department are available on its website; and all courses are available at https://www.ln.edu.hk/progs/ssprog/4year/bss2018.pdf.  The normal teaching load is around 6 hours per week per semester.  The appointees are expected to start in August 2019 or soon thereafter.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in sociology, social policy, public health and social services or a related discipline, with relevant teaching experience and publication record.  A record of obtaining research grants and administrative experience will be distinct advantages.  Applicants should provide information on their research interests and research plans, teaching portfolio, and evidence of quality teaching.  Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential.  The appointees are expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and collegiality; engage actively in research and grantsmanship; and contribute to the scholarly activities and service in the Department and the University. Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive.  Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, housing benefits and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointees.

Appointments will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointments with possibility of consideration for substantiation.
