POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION FOR AI APPLICATIONS IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

KU Leuven, ranking among the top 50 universities worldwide, is an institution for research and education with international appeal. All programs at this University are based on the innovative research of its scientists and professors. This project will be carried out as a PhD. study within the group of Prof. Enis Leblebici, situated in Campus Diepenbeek of the Faculty of Engineering Technology of KU Leuven. This team is a part of Lab4U section. Lab4U performs research on the development of new technologies and their implementation in existing chemical processes. The group mainly focuses on the miniaturization and intensification of chemical production. Developed technologies include the use of light, ultrasound, green chemicals, micro-flow reactors. Within the Lab4U team, Prof. Enis Leblebici specializes on design, control and optimization of scalable flow systems. His research group utilizes both lower (PID) and higher hierarchy process control platforms (PLC, LabView) to address complicated reaction and separation processes.

Responsibilities

This study is within the framework of a new national project funded by the Flemish Government and chemical industry. The successful candidate is expected to: 

  • maintain partnership with the AI expert team members and quickly start developing own AI codes
  • guide one PhD student and give AI coding support and guidance
  • develop new ideas and write projects for local and international funding bodies      

Profile

For this PhD position, a PhD in computer science is required.

For candidates from chemical engineering background, prior modelling experience is a must. They must also be enthusiastic to learn AI model development. Prior AI development experience is an absolute plus. 

For candidates from computer sciences, AI development experience is a must.

Offer

The researcher will be hired at first on a one year scholarship. This period can be extended depending on the background of the candidate (last work post, last host country, PhD defense date). The aim during this first year(s) is to apply for Marie Curie, FWO and KU Leuven funds in partnership with the researcher. A team of experts will guide and support to the researcher to write their own projects and funding proposals.
