Postdoc for Software Development/Application MPI-AMRVAC within ERC Prominent
POSTDOC FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT/APPLICATION MPI-AMRVAC WITHIN ERC PROMINENT
Within the ERC Advanced grant PROMINENT from PI Rony Keppens, three positions are available for computationally aided solar physics research. The main research topic is to unravel the secrets of Solar Prominences: How, where and why does the million degree solar corona spontaneously form these gigantic structures? What causes the fine-structure throughout the prominence body, and what is the role of solar tornadoes often found at their feet? How do they relate to coronal rain and can we model their entire lifecycle from formation to eruption? Within the next 5 years, a dedicated team effort led by Prof. Keppens and embedded within the Centre for mathematical Plasma Astrophysics at KU Leuven sets forth to guide, interpret, and confront solar prominence activity in upcoming observations.
This postdoc is intended to play a prominent role in the development of,support for and application of our MPI-parallelized, open source Fortran code MPI-AMRVAC (see http://amrvac.org/) and its suite of python-based post-processing tools. Here we seek to fill a strategic position hosted by our CmPA division.
Demonstrated experience with High Performance Computing, numerical algorithm design and implementation, and/or computational fluid, plasma or MHD dynamics is essential. Knowledge of Fortran, python, and MPI is desirable, although any relevant software development will be appreciated. This position requires successfull candidates to have a PhD in either of computer science, mathematics, physics or astronomy (or closely related subject).
Here we seek to fill a strategic position hosted by our CmPA division that may outrun the 5 year project duration, but the successful applicant will initially be hired for a two year term, extendable for another two or three years after positive evaluation.
