Development And Alumni Relations

Senior Management
Grade 10 £63,464 - £77,748 (base salary) with possibility of market supplement

Durham University is founded on philanthropy. The University was established through a generous gift by Bishop van Mildert in 1832, a gift that included Durham Castle and much of the land and buildings we still occupy today. Since then, the loyalty and generosity of the friends of the University have factored in establishing Durham as one of the very best universities in the UK.

The role will oversee, direct and provide leadership for the operations of the University development and alumni relations programmes. This includes oversight of development communications, alumni relations, the annual fund (direct mail and telephone campaigns), major gifts activities, legacies, trusts & foundations, and corporations.

The post holder will work especially closely with the Vice-Chancellor and the Pro Vice Chancellor-Global in shaping University fund raising policies, and setting a strategic direction for fundraising and alumni relations. They will create and oversee plans for the support of alumni relations and development efforts in Colleges and Departments.

Responsibilities will include developing, maintaining, enhancing, and expanding a programme of diverse contacts – nationally and internationally – with the University’s many constituencies in order to:

  • Serve as an informed advocate of the University in terms of its strategic direction, mission, goals, objectives and programmes
  • Increase the number of donors to the University by cultivating a culture of philanthropy amongst its alumni and friends
  • Increase the level of financial support provided to the University by individuals, corporations, trusts and foundations
  • Provide a programme of information and communications that strengthens relationships with alumni, donors and friends of the University
