About Griffith University

At Griffith University we believe in, strive for and celebrate the remarkable.

We are known for our high impact research, outstanding student experience, our commitment to social justice and our welcoming environment. We're proud of our remarkable achievements, of our people and their passion for making a positive difference. Together we contribute to the development of knowledge and learning in an attractive environment which values excellence, equity, diversity, and innovation.

The Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution (ARCHE) was founded in 2016 as part of Griffith University's strategic research initiative. ARCHE is part of the Environmental Futures Research Institute (EFRI) and is one of Australia's leading research centres in Archaeology and Human Evolution. ARCHE is the first academic centre specifically focused on gaining a deeper understanding of the scale of ancient human migrations and the full story of the origins of the people in our region.

ARCHE has achieved a high national and international profile with seven of its staff members holding prestigious fellowships, including a Laureate Fellowship and several Future and DECRA fellowships. ARCHE has been highly successful in attracting external research funding. Since 2016, ARCHE staff members have co-authored 13 papers in Nature and 3 in Science. Two of these papers were regarded as a science breakthrough by the journal Science. ARCHE was specifically mentioned when Griffith University became Nature Index's Rising Star for the Oceania Region in 2018.

The opportunity

Following the retirement of Professor Rainer Grün , there is an opportunity to lead this remarkable Research Centre. The Director contributes significantly to the University's research profile by providing leadership and management of ARCHE as well as being responsible for the development and achievements of the Centre.

This is a 5-year fixed term, full-time position based at Nathan campus, with an underlying continuing Professorial (Level E) appointment in the School of Environment and Science.

About you

The new Director is expected to be of high international standing and to develop a long-term vision for ARCHE, with the goal of establishing a Centre of Excellence for Human Evolution. While the candidate is expected to be an international research leader in any of ARCHE's themes, preference will be given to candidates with expertise in genomics or geochronology applied to human evolution and with experience in managing diverse interdisciplinary teams. The Director will also have the capacity to expand the Centre's existing national and international networks and the ability to manage and develop the Centre's collaborative partnerships within Griffith University and with external partners. This position will suit an academic leader who possesses strong visionary, strategic and collegial management skills, with an established research profile in one or more of the Centre's themes. The appointee will also have outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong and productive relationships with all stakeholders.

Company

Griffith University is one of Australia’s most innovative tertiary institutions and an influential contributor to education and research in the Asia–Pacific region. A relatively young university, Griffith has pioneered new directions and grown from a single-campus university to a large, multi-campus institution with more than 50,000 students, six campuses in South East Queensland including a Digital campus, and a network of over 200,000 graduates. Today, Griffith is known for its high-impact research, outstanding student experience, commitment to social justice and welcoming environment, and ranks among the top two percent of universities worldwide.

RESEARCH FOR A BETTER FUTURE

Conducting impactful, socially relevant research is central to Griffith’s values and success, with more than 30 research centres and institutes hosted at its campuses.

Behind Griffith’s frequently groundbreaking output are researchers working out of internationally recognised units such as the Griffith Institute for Drug Discovery (GRIDD), the Australian Rivers Institute (ARI), the Cities Research Institute (CRI), the Griffith Asia Institute (GAI) and the Menzies Health Institute Queensland (MHIQ), among others.

Griffith works across disciplines, in partnerships and across countries to bring together the right teams to answer the big questions of today and tomorrow. Areas of strategic focus for research include:

  • Climate change adaptation
  • Water science, criminology
  • Health and chronic diseases
  • Drug discovery
  • Quantum physics
  • Music
  • Nursing
  • Sustainable tourism
  • Environment

LEARNING AND TEACHING INNOVATION

Home to four Australian University Teachers of the Year, Griffith has long been nationally renowned as an incubator of educational innovation and excellence. The University introduced Australia’s first degrees in environmental studies and Asian studies, and continues to rethink and reshape the way it engages students to help them develop the skills they need to succeed well after they graduate.

Griffith offers more than 200 degrees across a range of disciplines, including:

  • Architecture, construction and planning
  • Business and government
  • Criminology and law
  • Education
  • Engineering, IT and aviation
  • Humanities, languages and social science
  • Medicine, dentistry and health
  • Music and performing arts
  • Science and environment
  • Visual and creative arts

Griffith’s range of degrees are fundamentally informed by industry, providing students the resources and opportunities to be exposed to the kinds of experiences they are likely to encounter in their work life. Several of the University’s degrees offer students the chance to take up work placements, internships, field trips and other work-integrated learning opportunities as part of their education, helping them to develop and apply the knowledge they gain in the classroom in practical settings relevant to their career.

These experiences are made possible by Griffith’s extensive ties to industry and the community, with a range of partnerships and collaborations helping students make valuable connections in their field, work on research projects and gain important insight to the everyday realities of their professional journey.

LIFE ON CAMPUS

Griffith recognises that learning should be a welcoming, exceptional experience for its students, and each of its locations strives to encourage a vibrant, diverse and thriving community, from cafes and retail outlets to social events and competitions, student clubs and societies, and more.

The University has about 120 clubs and societies, reflecting the broad spectrum of passions and interests shared among its students.

Griffith’s campuses boast a range of sporting and fitness facilities—including a world-class multisport complex at Nathan and the Gold Coast’s national-standard athletics track and aquatic centre—for the benefit of University students, staff and the local community.
