Comprised of extraordinary faculty and staff, our mission is to improve the diagnosis, treatment and basic understanding of human disease. We accomplish this through our clinical services, research, and training the future leaders in pathology and related fields.  A major focus of clinical research in the Department continues to be the correlation of patient outcome and treatment response with the surgical pathologic diagnosis of human cancers. About this Job: 

The Department of Pathology, seeks a Lab Assistant I to provide a range of support functions for our research laboratory, including preparation of fly food, making complex media, reagents, buffers, and pour agar plates; checking and recording temperatures of refrigeration units in the main lab and Flow Lab; glassware washing; ordering reagents; stocking shelves; and cleaning incubators.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some familiarity with a laboratory environment highly desired.  Will be trained to do this work.
  • Ability to follow detailed oral and/or written instructions (both verbal and written).
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform the characteristic duties.
  • Habits of cleanliness and neatness.
  • Demonstrated punctuality and consistent attendance.
  • In addition, demonstrated initiative and good judgment.
  • Ability to perform work with a minimum of error under general supervision.

Physical Requirements

  • Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.
  • Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, perform desk based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines
  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.
  • Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
  • Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.
  • In some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull a wheeled Glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds.

Working Conditions:

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gases, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.
