The Director of Corporate Engagement, Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute (HAI), reports to the Deputy Director of HAI and is responsible for leading HAI’s engagement with companies and foundations, developing and stewarding beneficial relationships that advance the mission, purpose, and agenda of HAI. This role requires strategic leadership, effective management, and hands-on work to conceptualize, launch, and manage a strategic program that will generate critical funding for the research and operational activities of the Institute, and provide broad benefit to the University as a whole.
The Director will lead large-scale and comprehensive programs of cooperation with companies across industrial sectors and academic disciplines, taking overall responsibility for all phases of the relationship from prospect and proposal development, to soliciting and negotiating agreements, to managing ongoing relationships. These relationships are critical to fundraising and to achieving HAI’s goals for societal impact, outreach, and education.
The Director will establish and maintain relationships with C-suite executives at major international companies. Corporate members provide valuable funding, real-world insights and challenges to study, and paths to large-scale impact.
Foundations can be an additional source of funding as well as means of achieving impact and implementation of research findings and recommendations.
The Director will conceptualize, develop, and execute high-impact programs working with relevant external groups that will educate and engage industry and foundation stakeholders, as well as gather input to inform the Institute’s work and maximize its real-world impact. Programs may include research or policy workshops, executive briefings and education, and visiting scholars, among others. The incumbent will promote efficient and responsible use of financial or in-kind support received from corporations and foundations, and will report regularly to HAI leadership and donors on the activities and results generated.
The Director will hire and manage a team that supports industry engagement and the industrial affiliates program which will have cross-university scope and impact. The Director is responsible for compliance with the University’s policies, rules and regulations in regards to all programs, including the Industry Affiliate Program, and works within existing University priorities and guidelines as well as establishing routine coordination with the Office of Development and regarding fundraising initiatives for HAI. The Director is accountable for program activities and assuring appropriate program expenditures.
The Director works closely to align and leverage strategy, research programs, data resources and computational infrastructure with the Data Sciences Initiative as part of Stanford’s Shaping the Digital Future initiatives, the Social Sciences Accelerator, and other existing and emerging activities on campus that will use and explore human-centered AI in their research and teaching.
The Director of Corporate Engagement is expected to contribute to HAI strategic planning and to lead planning external engagements, typically involving considerable ambiguity, complexity and scope. The Director may be assigned additional tasks.
Leadership Style, Organizational Aspects, and Requirements
The Director will be responsible for developing an organization to accomplish the Institute’s objectives for developing and implementing partnerships. The Director represents HAI across Stanford and externally in diverse venues and must be an effective ambassador and communicator. The Director must develop excellent relationships with other organizations across campus including Office of Development, Vice Provost and Dean of Research, Industrial Contracts Office, Communications, and other institutions such as the Freeman Spogli Institute, Hoover, and Data Science Initiative.
The Director is expected to be responsive, transparent, and creative. The Director must embody a collaborative leadership model, getting input from broad and diverse stakeholders and constituents—discovering interests and capabilities of faculty, opportunities and challenges faced by companies, and strategic directions of foundations—and then crafting programs that build upon those ideas. The Director is expected to display the highest standards of integrity and comply with the letter and spirit of all Stanford University policies.
Direct programs or functions of university wide impact in consultation with senior leadership.
- Lead strategic planning and analysis for complex university programs or functions with significant business, regulatory and/or technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise. Manage and direct the development, implementation, administration and evaluation of programs or functions. Monitor trends and recommend programs or functions direction.
- Act as the subject matter expert for School/unit and/or the university regarding the interpretation, implementation and compliance with policies and regulations. Recommend actions and/or resolve complex issues that span organizational boundaries.
- Represent the program or function at the university level and/or to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.
- Direct and manage outreach strategy that may include relationship development, communications, and compliance.
- Oversee or supervise staff in the development and implementation of programs or functions.
- Develop and oversee budgets; manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.
- Oversee the vetting of both entities and individuals who participate in the program by using the screening tools available on the DoResearch website.
- Stay abreast of changes in federal regulations and university policies concerning industrial affiliate programs.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
