The Kirby Institute is a leading global research institute dedicated to the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Established in 1986 in response to the then emerging HIV epidemic, the Kirby Institute now contributes to knowledge on a broad range of diseases, including viral hepatitis and sexually transmissible infections.
The Infection Analytics Program (IAP) includes a dozen applied mathematicians working on a wide variety of projects in infection and immunity. The team works closely with experimental collaborators in Australia, the USA and elsewhere to design and analyse experimental approaches to understanding the dynamics of host-viral interactions. The team is looking for a Research Associate/Postdoc Fellow to work on the mathematical modelling of experimental data on viral dynamics of HIV during treatment and after treatment interruption to better understand HIV latency. The study will involve developing familiarity with the HIV literature and the underlying biology, biostatistical analysis, and ODE and stochastic modelling.
About the role
- $75K-$123K plus 17% superannuation and leave loading (pro-rata if part time)

As a Research associate/Postdoc Fellow you will conduct modelling analysis of host-viral interactions in HIV infection; perform statistical analysis and fitting of models to experimental data on animal and human SIV / HIV infection dynamics; coordinate and contribute to the design, planning and execution of projects; liaise with collaborators to assist in planning/interpretation of the experimental work and making connections between models and data. You will also assist in the preparation and submission of research articles, ethics applications and grant applications.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Demonstrated mathematics, statistics, or computer programming skills relevant to modelling of experimental data.
- Interest in modelling in immunology and infection dynamics.
- Proven evidence of publications in peer reviewed journals
- Success in funding applications, student supervision and superior publication output required at the higher levels
- PhD, in mathematics / physics / statistics or other quantitative discipline.
