The Natural Resources Institute (NRI) (www.nri.org) is an internationally renowned multi-disciplinary centre of the University of Greenwich that undertakes research, consultancy and training to support global food security, sustainable development and poverty reduction in developing countries. The Institute was recently awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher and Education for its work in developing countries.

The Natural Resources Institute has an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral research fellow in anthropology, public health or development studies/social science in a health-related area to work within the Livelihoods and Institutions Department. The position will contribute to the MRC-funded project “Intercultural models to improve nutrition and health of indigenous populations through gender-sensitive agroforestry practices in Peru”. The project uses participatory approaches and intercultural models to co-develop gender-sensitive agroforestry options with the potential to sustainably address high levels of chronic undernutrition and anaemia in indigenous populations in the Peruvian Amazon.

In particular, the successful candidate will be expected to:

• Assist in the development of a framework to evaluate the influence of specific agroforestry practices, use of local biodiversity, and gender, socioeconomic and cultural factors on maternal and child dietary adequacy, anthropometric outcomes, and anaemia status.
• Assist in the analysis and collection of data on maternal time use, food-related sociocultural and gender norms, and personal and external food environments. 
• Assist in the development of context-specific participatory appraisal tools that enable a social learning process between the researchers and indigenous communities.
• Contribute to NRI’s strategic plan by publishing high-impact research.

The position will involve extended international travel.

The post is fixed term for 24 months.
