Zero Waste Manager
The Sustainability and SEM Business Services (SSBS) group cross seven guiding categories: infrastructure planning support, assessments, business systems, outreach and education, conservation and administrative efficiency. Starting FY 20, SSBS seeks an experienced campus waste manager to begin implementation of the in-house and peer reviewed zero waste management plan to reach 90% diversion by 2030 at Stanford. These Zero Waste programs will be executed within the strategic framework for sustainability and adept management of energy, water, building management and technology services at Stanford.
The ideal candidate will have education and experience in zero waste planning and implementation, business administration of solid waste, including knowledge of modern business and administrative technology and project management. The manager must be a highly self-motivated and effective individual with the ability to manage multiple programs in a complex and dynamic work environment at Stanford. Job Responsibilities/Core Duties:
Maintain Business Plan, Assessment and Analytics:
- Create the business plan from the finding of the Zero Waste feasibility study (2017-2019) and resulting campus goals
- Maintain documentation and record-keeping of best practices and data
- Maintain calculations for annual and monthly reports
- Develop data dashboards and other useful tools for campus users
- Keep with Stanford Long Range Planning process and desired coordination.
Collaborate with Facilities Operations:
Work with Facilities Operations to coordinate
- functions with the custodial vendor
- functions with the primary hauling vendor
- other relevant contracts
- Work with Facilities Operations to keep trends of administrative processes of waste operations and occasional escalations from customers.
Lead Zero Waste Implementation Elements:
Manage and implement the new and existing zero waste projects - from the zero waste planning through the close out of projects.
- Interview managers, engineers, and users and investigate current systems and practices as required to map out existing business processes to facilitate their incorporation into new long term business system programs.
- Lead transition for projects that will change/evolve.
- Certify/review new construction plans/floor plans for waste management, and ensure they are approved by custodial, building managers, and regional asset managers to meet the zero waste requirements and are properly recorded.
- Review and update relevant departmental documents, processes, guidelines and tools.
Maintain the relevant sections of the Facilities Design Guidelines.
Maintain project schedules, budgets, estimates, etc.
- Use technology (software, tracking devices) to maintain clear and sharable project status updates.
- Be prepared for status updates in short notice.
- Gather and maintain regulatory requirements in the city, county and state and incorporate requirements into zero waste plans and projects as needed
- Manage project reviews for conformance to regulatory requirements and campus policies.
- Provide proactive status updates on regulatory changes and proposed solutions.
Support campus education (students, staff, faculty) and training:
- Develop zero waste specific education and training tools with office of sustainability outreach program manager, and in accordance with campus programs and services.
- Provide training and mentorship to campus staff and students on waste management process, status and opportunities for engagement.
- Coordinate zero waste implementation trainings, including developing education and outreach programs, equipment purchases, etc.
- Oversee development and training of administrative personnel, which includes development and implementation of short and long term training plans. Coordinate individual and/or group training events.
- Interface and coordinate work with other units, i.e., Parking and Transportation, DAPER, R&DE, Schools, Institutes, Cafes, and selected retails.
- Work with a number of on- and off-campus departments to engage participation and support for zero waste building roll-outs.
- Work with director to collaborate on any related faculty research projects.
- Work with office of sustainability in recruiting and utilizing student interns.
- Service on campus committees representing the department or unit.
LBRE Continuous improvement:
- Continuously evaluate and improve service, cost and business efficiency in a proactive basis.
- Take initiative to make recommendations to modify zero waste plans to incorporate needs of the project.
- Occasionally perform organizational, campus and administrative activities not directly relating to job description.
- Bachelor’s degree and five years or relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Graduate degree is a plus.
- Additional training and certifications are desired.
- Industry waste management affiliations are a plus.
- 5 – 10 years of waste management related experience.
- Proven knowledge of university facilities management and utilities business processes including systems for the collection, storage, analysis, and reporting.
- Proven knowledge of building and construction, design, construction, zero waste practices and goals.
- Must possess strong organizational, time management and project management skills, with the ability to support multiple projects of various types at difference stages with emphasis on accuracy and meeting milestones and deadlines.
- Demonstrated skill in the use of spreadsheets, database programs, and word processing programs.
- Knowledge of basic software systems design and operating principles including business process mapping, system architecture.
