Job description

Competitive Salary

The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) is a unique collaboration between Coventry University and Unipart Manufacturing Group. Created to address the UK's productivity gap and demand for skilled engineers, the Institute has developed a proven solution through delivery of: a suite of manufacturing engineering degrees including industry-led practical work solving real problems in a real factory - the UK's first "Faculty on the Factory Floor", advanced manufacturing facilities supporting higher degree and business-focussed research and commercialisation of technology and delivery of impact with Unipart, its customers and supply chain.

We have reached an important growth phase in AME's 5 year history, where we have secured new funding to grow our space, scope and facilities, and we are now seeking a dynamic and visionary Director for the Institute to grow our research in advanced manufacturing and work with Unipart and other companies to further establish AME's position of leadership in manufacturing skills and research.

The Director has overall responsibility for the strategic leadership and management of AME, ensuring that the team delivers against allof its targets both financially and operationally. The role requires effective governance of AME, including the key strategic relationship with Unipart, through setting and monitoring of business and research KPIs as well as organising and chairing Management and Supervisory board meetings. An important immediate requirement is to ensure that the outputs from the LEP-funded AME expansion project are met in full.

The research activities form an integral part of a much broader engineering research portfolio within our Institute for Future Transport and Cities, encompassing Design, Materials, Powertrain and Advanced Systems, as well as Manufacturing. Each of these groups has its own industry-facing institute, which provides excellent routes for partnership development and impactful research; together they provide an impressive platform for cross-discipline working and exciting research.

AME is also part of the School of Mechanical, Aerospace & Automotive Engineering, within Coventry University's Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing. The School has achieved recognition for high levels of research activity and competence,as well as teaching quality and student satisfaction (ranked in the Guardian University Guide in the country's top two for our courses in Mechanical Engineering)

The successful candidate will use his/her knowledge in the areas outlined above to contribute to the School's engineering degrees. The Director will share our passion for delivering a positive student experience that puts excellence in teaching and learning at the heart of everything we do, and be able to demonstrate significant knowledge in his/her areas of specialisation.

Experience of working on applied research projects or contracts, as well as participation in professional practice/consultancy will be advantageous for this role. The Director must also have experience of working with, and preferably in, an engineering/manufacturing company environment as the reputation of AME depends heavily on its credibility with industry.
