Coventry has established a reputation for pushing the boundaries of higher education nationally and across the world. It is an award-winning University that refuses to rest on its laurels. It is ranked no.13 UK University in the Guardian University Guide 2019, is the UK's top new university (The Guardian and Complete University Guides 2018), is 4th for student experience and teaching quality (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017), and holds a Gold TEF award.

The School of Humanities is internationally recognized, and award-winning with a tradition of innovation. Our alumni inform, create and shape the world around us. The School is a vibrant environment which embraces innovation in teaching, research and professional practice and offers exciting undergraduate and postgraduate courses including, Creative Writing, English, History, International Relations, Languages, Politics, Criminology, and Sociology. The School is linked with the University's Research Centre in Trust Peace and Social Relations, the Centre for Arts, Memory and Communities, and the Faculty Research Centres.

We are now seeking an exceptional candidate to join us as Associate Head of School to lead the School through its next phase of the growth and development of its educational portfolio. This will see the achievement of an ambitious strategic vision, which defines the future of Humanities education at Coventry and shapes the future of its disciplines through our national and international collaborations.

The Associate Head of School role provides opportunity for a talented and ambitious academic who wishes to utilise managerial experience and skills within a highly creative context.

The role offers an opportunity to make a leading contribution to the School of Humanities by:

  • Working closely with the Head of School to drive forward the School's contribution to the University's Corporate Plan, assuming lead responsibility for the development and maintenance of Student Experience initiatives;
  • Liaising closely with the Associate Heads of School to develop innovative pedagogic practices, aligned with our internationalisation, enterprise and commercial activities as well as the research, which support the school's aims;
  • Supporting the Head in representing the School internally and externally, and implementing policies and procedures at School level.

The successful candidate will have a PhD alongside experience in a relevant subject area coupled with a track record of academic excellence, and evidence of delivering an innovative, student-centred curriculum. They should have a sound awareness of the external market/environment and the ability to take advantage of opportunities to collaborate with Creative Industry (and other) organisations. They will require an understanding of innovative approaches to teaching and learning including the utilisation of online/digital/multi-platform applications.

This post offers external candidates the opportunity to secure a substantive post as an Associate Professor based on Coventry University's criteria for selection to those roles. This appointment will then commence with a four-year tenure as Associate Head of School  and the appointee will be treated as if on secondment to that post, moving into the substantive post of Associate Professor on completion of the four-year term.

Coventry University is committed to providing our employees with the very best opportunities for both career and personal development. We offer a wide choice of development and training courses to all staff as well as generous holiday allowances, generous pensions and flexible working options. As well as a tailored development programme, we offer a comprehensive benefit package and will consider assistance for those wishing to relocate to the Coventry area.
