The School is vitally involved in teaching, research and community education activities. The school has core research facilities to support virtually all contemporary forms of biomedical research.

SoMS is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the filed of ocular research with a major focus on corneal homeostasis, corneal disease, corneal stem cell biology, and developing methods for transplanting stem cells as a therapeutic option to treat patients with blindness caused by severe corneal disease.

About the role

  • $95,449 to $102,091 plus 9.5% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed-Term until: 29-09-2020 (with the possibility to extend further 12 months)
  • Full-time

The role involves conducting research on the mammalian cornea, focusing on the epithelium and other resident cells that maintain this tissue in a health state. The successful applicant will identify, isolate and characterise adult corneal epithelial stem cells, identify novel native and/or synthetic scaffolds to act as a substrate-carrier, and engraft these bio-constructs in appropriate animal models. It is expected the appointee will have advanced experience in stem cell biology, molecular, biochemical, proteomic, transcriptomic techniques, high-end scanning fluorescence confocal and light-sheet microscopy, and proficiency in small animal handling, surgery and clinical monitoring.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Research experience in stem cell biology and assays pertinent to the field including but not limited to; stem cell isolation, culture, characterisation, cloning, flow cytometry, FACS sorting, immunofluorescence, qRT-PCR, single cell RNA sequencing, transcriptomics, microarray technology and scanning confocal and light-sheet microscopy.
  • Experience with handling small animals including performing surgeries and clinical monitoring including microscopy (intravital slit-lamp, OCT and confocal).
  • Excellent quantitative research and analytical skills with demonstrated understanding of experimental design and execution, and ability to establish new assays and technologies independently.
  • The ability to conduct research as evidenced by international peer-reviewed or equivalent publications.
  • A PhD or equivalent qualifications in medical sciences, preferably in ocular, more specifically cornea or a related field.
