Research Fellow in Terahertz Spectroscopy and Imaging of Condensed Matter Systems

Employer
UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS
Location
Leeds, United Kingdom
Salary
£33,199 to £39,609 p.a.
Closing date
30 Jun 2019

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?  Do you have an established background in condensed matter physics, and the understanding of topological materials?  Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities?

This project aims to develop topological insulating (TI) materials, based on the GaSb-Al(Ga)Sb-InAs and BiTeSe materials systems, and investigate these materials using terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and imaging, including THz microscopy.  It will also investigate opportunities for THz studies of single and multi-layer two-dimensional (2D) systems, and impurity states in semiconductors.

The THz region of the electromagnetic spectrum lies between the infrared and microwave regions, and offers the potential to probe energy scales and relaxation times in TI and 2D materials systems.  This will enable both exploration of fundamental physics, and development of the next generations of energy efficient electronic devices.  Terahertz technologies also offer the possibility to manipulate energy states in these systems, underpinning the development of future quantum technologies.

In this project, you will fabricate electronic devices based on TI materials, characterise these using magnetotransport measurements, and then investigate the materials and devices using terahertz spectroscopy and imaging (including near-field microscopy).  You will also compare and contrast your results with those obtained from other 2D materials systems. Through this, you will road-map opportunities for THz technologies to probe and manipulate energy states in future electronic devices, leading to new fundamental science, with long-term exploitation opportunities.

You will work within an interdisciplinary team of early-career academics, research fellows and postgraduate researchers in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and liaise strongly with researchers in the School of Physics and Astronomy.  You will have a strong background in Electronic Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline. You will have a proven track-record in measuring 2D materials, and an enthusiastic, proactive approach to research within an interdisciplinary team.
