Position Overview

The Lecturer, Accounting and Finance works to strengthen their relevant Discipline by providing quality teaching and research. The candidate is expected to have data analytic and modeling skills applicable to accounting and/or finance.

The incumbent is required to teach in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, conduct research activity, and perform academic and service tasks as required.

The Lecturer, Accounting and Finance contributes to the ongoing development of the disciplines and the College by contributing to professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline and service activities within the College and the University

The Division of Tropical Environments and Societies strategic agenda recognises the grand challenges facing the world today and the particular role that will be played out in the Tropics. The Office of the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies provides collaborative leadership with the Colleges and ensures that the Colleges are able to deliver the core business of learning and teaching, research and engagement and contribute effectively to the strategic agenda. The Division is uniquely positioned to deliver excellence through teaching, learning and research in the areas of Science, Engineering, Planning, Information Technology, Business, Law, Governance, Education, Arts and Social Sciences. Teachers and researchers within the Division have achieved National and International recognition.

College of Business, Law and Governance

The College of Business, Law and Governance (CBLG) is part of the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies and delivers a range of courses in Cairns, Singapore, and Townsville. It is led by the Acting Dean, Professor Elizabeth Spencer and promotes, fosters, supports and administers quality teaching and research across three key areas:

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Develop, deliver and coordinate academic and/or technical education subjects for undergraduate and postgraduate Accounting and Finance students both for on campus and external students, including course materials embodying the development of new teaching technologies.
  2. Undertake appropriate research and publish in referred journals or conferences contained in the ERA journal and conference lists.
  3. Act as a supervisor or part of a supervisory team for honours and postgraduate students in finance and/or accounting.
  4. Actively participate in the development of the Accounting and/or Finance disciplines including administrative support, marketing and industry representative duties in support of the College’s activities.
  5. Provide consultation with students and academic advising, respond to all student email queries promptly, within a reasonable period.
  6. Participate in administrative services to the College and Division as requested by the Dean of College, including membership of relevant committees.
  7. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  8. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
  9. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff. 

  1. The Lecturer, Accounting and/or Finance is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Lecturer, Accounting and/or Finance is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations.  Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
  3. The Lecturer, Accounting and/or Finance is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct. 

Special Conditions

  • It is a requirement of this position that the appointee may be required to travel to undertake duties at the Cairns or Townsville campuses.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. PhD or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, or Data Analytics and/or a Masters level qualifications with recent industry experience.
  2. Broad knowledge of the finance and accounting discipline area with particular focus on analysis of one or more of data analytic and modelling skills, financial information, financial advising.
  3. Demonstrated capacity for high quality teaching and supervision in accounting/finance at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. Stronger applicants will have demonstrated capacity in teaching first year bachelor students.
  4. Record of research achievements. Stronger applicants will have research achievements on the intersection of accounting and finance.
  5. Evidence of ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  6. Understanding of equity and diversity principles; knowledge of occupational health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant training.

Desirable

  1. Ability to liaise with high schools and encourage high school students to study accounting, finance and/or financial advising at a tertiary level.
  2. Capability of teaching in Financial Advising.
