Engine Shed Operations Manager
Division/School Research and Enterprise Development
Contract type Open Ended
Working pattern Full time
Salary £43267 - £48677 per annum
Closing date for applications 10-Jul-2019
Engine Shed opened five years ago and has achieved a significant local, national and increasingly international reputation. Would you like to manage that building, and subsequent buildings, to build on this phenomenal start?
Engine Shed is many things – it’s a venue, coworking space, office space provider and an economic development project in its own right. Amongst other independent tenants, it hosts the world’s joint top business incubator, SETsquared Bristol. The team who run Engine Shed and SETsquared Bristol work for the University of Bristol and trade through a subsidiary company (The Science Research Foundation – “SRF”).
The current role holder has been at Engine Shed since day one, and this is a great opportunity to take the reins of Operations Manager and ensure a we deliver a commercial operation whilst working towards our mission of sustainable and inclusive economic development.
You will be a team player who is entirely comfortable working in a small, growing, dynamic business. The business has grown revenue 5-fold in the last 5 years and expects to deliver further significant growth with the potential of expansion into new sites as well as growth in capacity and capability. You’ll look after the Grade I listed building with a direct team of reports and you’ll manage the finances, budgets and reporting for SRF, and develop processes that are fit for purpose as we grow; you’ll be creative about problem solving and you’ll be resilient to change and be able to demonstrate a people-first approach to management.
Our audiences are broad: from tenants and event users, to visiting international trade missions and primary school children; from technology startups and scaleups to government, from potential room-hirers to angel investors, from regular business users of our Members’ Lounge to infrequent coworkers. Our Member’s Lounge is always humming to the rhythm of the variety of users visiting each day – over 30,000 in a year. You get to own and lead on all operations activity, working with the team and external support. It will be fast paced, varied and above all stimulating – there really isn’t a position quite like it.
Nothing has stayed still for very long in our business to date, yet we are at the cusp of perhaps our most significant growth – our ‘scaling up’ phase – have you got the enthusiasm, wit and expertise to ensure that our operations support our ambition to remain at the top? These are exciting times.
We serve a very diverse audience and need fresh perspectives, so positively welcome applicants from all backgrounds and experiences.
It is anticipated that interviewing will be held in Bristol on 26 July 2019.
