Position Overview 

The Program of Anthropology is seeking to appoint a scholar with a strong record of field research in, and high-quality publication on Mainland Southeast Asia and/or East Asia.

Preference will be given to an anthropologist who has carried out research in mainland SE Asia, but applicants with experience in other areas of Southeast Asia or East Asia will be considered.

The Program has a distinguished record of research in the region, with particular strengths at the College level on Asian history, economy and political culture.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

1) conduct a program of research which reflects existing research priorities, including areas of contemporary theoretical significance, especially in the areas of environmental politics and development, language, religious and political processes;

2) participate actively in the interdisciplinary activities of the School of Culture History and Language; and at college and university level;

3) engage in undergraduate teaching and post-graduate training;

4) demonstrate strong leadership capabilities and a vision to drive the study of anthropology and Asian studies at ANU.

The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP) leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, teaching and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region. 

The School of Culture, History and Language is the focus of research and teaching in Asian and Pacific humanities, social sciences and languages and seeks to build excellence in understanding and capability in engaging with the Asia and Pacific region. The key disciplines that are represented in the School are anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, linguistics, and languages, all contributing to the foundational knowledge of Asia and the Pacific.
