Applications are invited from talented and enthusiastic individuals to conduct world-leading research on the degradation and environmental fate of plastic litter, under the supervision of Dr Tom Bond. The successful applicant will work on a our project initially for up to 24-months, Predicting the Polymer-specific Fate of Aquatic Plastic Litter, which is funded by The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The project will characterise the formation and behaviour of micro- and nano-plastics under controlled laboratory conditions. Resultant data will be used to predict the environmental fate and impacts of a variety of polymers and propose workable solutions to the problems associated with plastic litter.

Applicants must have a PhD (or be close to completing their PhD) in a subject relevant to the project, i.e. engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, environmental science or a related discipline. The successful applicant will use state-of-the-art experimental facilities across the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and interact with industrial and academic collaborators. They will be proactive, keen to work in a multidisciplinary environment, and have experience of disseminating research findings in well-ranked journals.

The University of Surrey is a short walk from Guildford town centre, adjacent to the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and 40 minutes by train from central London.

Full-time position available until 30 September 2021. Salary offered will be dependent on experience and qualifications.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,302) per annum (full-time) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the verified original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,236) per annum (full time).
