The MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit (IEU) is seeking a talented research associate or senior research associate in Biostatistics and Causal Inference.
The post holder will work closely with Dr Jack Bowden and Professor Deborah Lawlor to apply Mendelian Randomisation methods to newly-available data in UK Biobank participants and other relevant data (including publicly available summary data) to ascertain the causal role of sleep disturbance on type 2 diabetes traits.
Specifically, the project will bring together data on
- Sleep traits (as assessed by questionnaire and activity monitoring);
- Genetic data and data on blood measures of glucose control (e.g. HbA1c, glucose, insulin) data;
- Incident diabetes data from questionnaires and primary and secondary care record linkage.
The Mendelian randomization analysis conducted by the post-holder is part of a larger collaborative project between the universities of Manchester, Exeter and Bristol to determine whether sleep traits: a) improve diabetes prediction; b) are causally related to diabetes traits and c) predict diabetes-related complications. In addition to applying state-of-the-art Mendelian randomization methods, the candidate will be encouraged to develop novel causal inference methods of their own.
The successful candidate will have a strong statistical or genetics background, with experience using Stata, R and other programming languages and experience working with a range of large-scale data sources. You will also have experience of applied statistical analysis and will have a good understanding of genome-wide association and Mendelian randomization methods.
The successful candidate will be appointed at either Research Associate (grade I) or Senior Research Associate (grade J) depending on experience.
