Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences

School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing

Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is ranked amongst the top 100 universities in the world and a member of the prestigious Australian Group of Eight research-intensive universities.  With an enviable research track record, vibrant campus and working environments, supported by the freedom to ‘innovate and inspire’ there is no better time to join Western Australia’s top University.

About the team

The Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences encompasses three Schools – the School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing, the School of Engineering, and the Oceans Graduate School.

The Faculty has an international reputation for excellence in research and its research teams benefit from global partnerships with industry, attracting research income of more than $27 million a year – well above the national average. With cross-disciplinary research groups, the Faculty offers a creative and innovative research environment. The Faculty seeks to promote teaching excellence and to embrace the latest forms of effective educational delivery, and produce graduates with skill sets that promote flexibility and recognise the need for life-long learning.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing is renowned for its research and teaching in pure and applied mathematics, statistics and data science. The Statistics section has seven full-time staff engaged in research and teaching, and includes the director of the Centre for Applied Statistics that employs a number of contract staff in statistics. The academic staff in Statistics are collaborating on interdisciplinary research in engineering, medicine, biology/biochemistry, public health, oceans research, astronomy and mathematics education and currently supervise or co-supervise more than 10 PhD students.  Our statistics seminar series brings together statisticians from across different disciplines at UWA including PhD students and post-docs.

Statistics has developed strong links with Computer Science and is establishing a joint major for the combined computer science/statistics undergraduate degree in Data Science, as well as increasing statistics courses in the joint Master in Data Science.
