The Liverpool Screen School seeks a highly motivated individual to teach script/screenwriting at undergraduate and post-graduate level within the Creative Writing programme. You will have expertise in screenwriting/script that will include a track record of work that has been broadcast/performed/published, and you will have the necessary skills and experience to teach at HE level.

The Creative Writing department sits in the Liverpool Screen School, which in turn forms part of LJMU's Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies. The school offers undergraduate programmes in Creative Writing, Drama, Film Studies, Journalism and Media Production, together with postgraduate courses in Writing, Screenwriting and International Journalism.  The School prides itself on having developed a warm and friendly environment with a strong commitment to nurturing and supporting creativity, whilst offering first-class student support and excellent learning resources.

The Creative Writing team currently comprises eleven members of staff who come from backgrounds in writing for stage, radio, screen, fiction (novel and short story), creative non-fiction and poetry. The department delivers the BA (Hons) Creative Writing degree https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2017/creative-writing, and three joint honours programmes: Creative Writing & English, Creative Writing & Drama, Creative Writing & Film Studies. We deliver two part-time Masters programmes which are taught over two years: MA Writing, MA Screenwriting.

Creative Writing is a well-established programme with a growing research profile and reputation, particularly in its focus on cross-subject collaboration and writing within the community. The Creative Writing programme at LJMU offers students the opportunity to experiment with a variety of forms and genres, and to critically analyse and reflect on their writing process. Regular performance opportunities, masterclasses and the visiting writer series all foster a strong identity as a community of writers. The Creative Writing department enjoys collaborative partnerships with Tate Liverpool and The Bluecoat Arts Centre.

External engagement, entrepreneurship and internationalisation is promoted throughout the programme.

Work-related learning is an important component of the undergraduate course with students developing practice-based writing projects. The department works with LJMU’s centre for Entrepreneurship and alumni of the programme have successfully established businesses on graduation. New staff will be expected to complement this activity and contribute their professional experience and expertise.

Creative Writing is developing its strategic priorities in research, postgraduate provision, internationalisation, public engagement and enterprise activity.  Reporting to the Programme Leader, the Senior Lecturer appointed will contribute to these developments, whilst also undertaking teaching and administrative duties across the Creative Writing portfolio.

Current areas of industry practice / research interests in the department include: Radio Drama, Crime Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction, Poetry & Poetics, Public Arts Projects, Travel-Writing, Site-specific productions, and participatory writing within disadvantaged communities.

Liverpool is a city with a long and rich tradition of literature, and is an excellent base to compose and teach Creative Writing. The city boasts a vibrant culture and LJMU is proud of its many connections with local media and arts organisations, including The Everyman and Playhouse, The Unity Theatre, The Royal Court Theatre, The Liverpool Philharmonic, The Liverpool Tate, Lime Pictures, Liverpool Film Office, ITV and the BBC.

Informal enquiries may be made to Sarah Maclennan, Head of Creative Writing at the Liverpool Screen School, email: s.a.maclennan@ljmu.ac.uk

LJMU values diversity and provides a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can fulfil their potential.

Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
