Who we are

Founded in 1893, Selwyn College (Te Maru Pūmanawa) is the oldest residential college at the University of Otago. Situated on campus, the College provides accommodation, care and support to 200+ residents comprising first and second year students and a senior student welfare team.

Selwyn is an independent College, affiliated to the University of Otago and governed by a Board of Governors on behalf of owners, the Anglican Diocese of Dunedin.

In 2017, the Board of Governors established an agreement with the University of Otago to provide senior leadership personnel. To fulfil its obligation under the service agreement, the University seeks to employ a suitably qualified and experienced senior staff member to work alongside the College Warden.

The role

The Deputy Warden reports to the Warden and is an integral role to all aspects of College life. In this position, you will assist the Warden with the provision of a positive collegiate experience for its residents and wider associated community.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Assisting the Warden with the operational management of the College.
  • Supporting the scholastic ambitions and pastoral needs of our residents.
  • Contributing to nurturing the special character of Selwyn College and developing and maintaining its reputation as one of excellence.
  • Overseeing the College activity and events programme and academic support initiatives.

Your skills and experience

We are looking for an exceptional individual with strong leadership skills and genuine desire to make a difference. You will also have:

  • Confidence and experience working with young adults in a leadership capacity.
  • High level of professionalism.
  • Proven experience in the areas of pastoral care, community development, communication and relationship building.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster academic success.
  • Exceptional organisational skills and initiative.

An understanding of and empathy for students commencing University is fundamental to this role. Experience in the tertiary sector would be a distinct advantage.

Further details

This is a University of Otago appointment and is for a permanent, full-time position. The proposed hours of work are 2.00pm-10.00pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

The role requires a high level of commitment, including rostered on-call.
