ANNEX SERVICES AND SCANNING ASSISTANT, MIT Libraries, to assist with electronic document delivery operations of the Library Storage Annex.  Document delivery duties include verifying citations in online catalog and other databases, applying fair use copyright guidelines to requests, retrieving materials from Annex stacks and Harvard Depository, daily preparation of digital scan files for desktop delivery of requested articles, and working with other Annex staff and student employees to meet deadlines and production goals and with Libraries Resource Sharing department staff to meet scanning deadlines for interlibrary lending requests.  Other responsibilities will include the daily check-in/out of library materials; assisting patrons virtually and on-site; compiling statistics on scanning, circulation, and storage activity; and other duties as assigned.  May serve at other library service desks and participate on committees/teams/groups/projects.  

This position provides an opportunity to use and develop skills related to scanning, document delivery, and digital libraries and is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a dynamic academic library setting.  

Job Requirements

REQUIRED:  at least six months’ direct/related experience that provided some understanding of scanning and library service functions; experience using library catalogs and other bibliographic databases; technical experience with digital imaging equipment and related Windows-based software applications; demonstrated ability to master new software, systems, and technology; customer service orientation; ability to meet deadlines, manage competing priorities, and work with minimal supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to lift 40 lbs., shelve and shift boxes of library materials, and push book trucks; and tolerance for exposure to dust.  Experience in an academic or research library environment desirable; as is experience with library-specific software, e.g., Aleph and ILLiad.  Job #17592-4

Salary:  $17.61/hour minimum, with actual rate based on qualifications and experience.  

There is some schedule flexibility between the hours of  8:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M.
