About our Team

The School of Engineering & Physical Sciences has an international teaching and research reputation and close connection with the professional and industrial world of science, engineering and technology.

We deliver teaching across 6 programmes: Chemistry; Physics; Electrical, Electronic & Computer Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering and Brewing & Distilling. In the recent 2020 Complete University Guide, Heriot-Watt University was ranked 35th in the UK and 6th in Scotland. At subject area level the School ranked 2nd in Scotland for Chemical Engineering.

Our research ranges from fundamental sciences through to engineering applications, all of which are supported by strong external funding.  We have around 150 full-time academic staff who drive this research activity and are based in 5 research institutes:  the Institute of Chemical Sciences, the Institute of Photonics & Quantum Sciences, the Institute of Mechanical, Process & Energy Engineering, the Institute of Sensors, Signals & Systems and the Institute of Biological Chemistry, BioPhysics & BioEngineering. Detailed Description

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated individual to join our teaching activities in the Chemical Engineering discipline of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS).

You will deliver and assess courses in Chemical Engineering on-campus and will collaborate with colleagues at our overseas campuses. The role may also include academic administration and course development and enhancement.

Key duties and responsibilities

Contribute to the teaching (lectures, tutorials and workshops) of up to 4 courses at SCQF levels 7, 8 and 9, covering topics in the area of chemical and process engineering. Undertake assessment of coursework and examinations, under the supervision of senior academic staff. Undertake basic administrative duties. Be required to register as a University teacher.
        
Education, qualifications and experience

Essential Criteria

  • A first degree in Chemical Engineering or cognate discipline essential, with an MSc or PhD in Chemical Engineering or cognate discipline desirable.
  • Experience of undergraduate teaching in Chemical Engineering or cognate discipline.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare clearly written and presented learning and teaching materials.
  • Ability to engage with students in the delivery of lectures and tutorials.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues in Edinburgh and overseas.
  • Excellent team working and communication skills.
  • Ability to work to deadlines.
  • Experience of using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in the preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials and web based assessment.
  • Familiarity with learning management software such as Blackboard, or equivalent.
  • Experience of providing academic support to student groups.
  • Experience of computer programming in MATLAB and VBA.
