The University’s new Affordable Housing Hallmark Research Initiative (AH-HRI) is a substantial investment by the University to seed fund research and engage with the policy community. The Academic Convenor will provide expert project coordination, significant intellectual contribution and help shape the AH-HRI initiative. The Academic Convenor’s appointment will be made as a Research Fellow Level B or Senior Research Fellow Level C subject to experience and will engage in research on affordable housing.

Applicants with research interests in housing policy, urban planning and housing, housing financing and housing economics and development as these apply to questions of affordability are invited to apply.

The Academic Convenor will liaise on housing affordability research with government and industry partners in the state of Victoria and City of Melbourne, with other researchers in the Faculty and across the University with the objective of furthering existing research collaborations and identifying potential new ones. The appointee will take the lead in developing sectoral and cross-sectoral collaboration through the scoping and organization of workshops and other public events. and head up committees as appropriate.

Approximately 40% of the Fellow’s time will be devoted to the leadership and organizational role, with the remaining 60% of time devoted to the Fellow’s own research, publishing, engagement and minor teaching activities.

To achieve these goals, the Convenor will work with a team of academic leaders and external advisors as part of the steering committee for the AH-HRI, and maintain close collaboration with the Housing Expo project led by the Director of the Melbourne School of Design, Prof Alan Pert.

In sum, the Academic Convenor/Research Fellow will be expected to provide intellectual contribution to the direction and help steer the research agenda of the Housing Hallmark initiative while engaging in their own high-quality research, publication and public engagement activities on housing affordability issues.

The appointee will be expected to seek opportunities to make appropriate to the nature of the role contributions to teaching with a view to embedding elements of the AH-HRI research into the Faculty’s program curricula.
