Overview of Program

The Center for Education Policy Research (CEPR) at Harvard University is pleased to announce its new Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship Program. This Fellowship program will allow exceptionally talented recent graduates to gain experience in the world of academic research while working on critical questions for the field of education around improving short and long-term outcomes for students. Fellows will have an opportunity to work with faculty and researchers to address pressing issues facing education leaders across the country.

Target Audience and Fellowship Requirements

We are looking to select Fellows who are excellent students with high potential for future work who are interested in going into a doctoral program focused on education research. We expect that Fellows will have completed their Bachelor’s before starting the Fellowship. Some students may also have a Master’s.

Fellows will be selected on the basis of research and statistical programming experience (Stata, R, Python), knowledge of quantitative research techniques in the social sciences, and excellence in their prior studies.

The Fellowship term is for one year, renewable for an additional year for strong performers. Renewal decisions will be made by the project Principal Investigators and research managers with whom the Fellow has worked.

We expect that most Fellows will go on to graduate school in Economics, Education Policy, or another social science after their second year, should they be offered a second year.

Training and Support

Much of the training that Fellows receive will be “on the project” during which Fellows will gain skills around data cleaning, research design, statistical programming, and analytics. However, Fellows will also participate in the following formal training:

  • Induction week. Each cohort of Fellows will spend their first week at CEPR learning about CEPR’s research work, CEPR standards of programming and analysis, workplanning, CEPR culture, and giving and receiving feedback.
  • Monthly Fellows seminars. Once a month Fellows will participate in a training seminar. These will cover either advanced methods (e.g., Bayesian analysis of experiments), education policy topics (e.g., recent findings on interventions to increase college access), or increasing professional effectiveness (e.g., communicating effectively with senior leaders).
  • Fellows will also be encouraged to attend the rich array of public seminars in education policy offered by CEPR, GSE, and other schools at Harvard.
  • Relevant PIs will meet individually with Fellows bi-annually to discuss their work and development. Fellows’ work and timelines will be guided on a day-to-day basis by CEPR research managers.

Special Instructions

  1. Upload your resume, cover letter, unofficial transcript(s), a writing sample (ideally a quantitative social science paper), and a sample of sample of statistical code that you have written.
  2. Arrange for two letters of recommendation to be submitted through the site.
  3. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the summer.
