The Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE) is a £8M initiative between Northumbria and Newcastle Universities. HBBE will develop biotechnologies to create a new generation of buildings which are responsive to their environment, grown using engineered living materials, metabolise their own waste, and modulate their microbiome to benefit human health. The Hub is a strategic expansion including 13 new academic staff, supported by 6 PDRAs, 12 PhD students and 3 support staff. This will include 3 new research facilities that will integrate our research: the Micro Bio-Design Lab (Northumbria), the Macro Bio-Design Lab (Newcastle) and a unique Experimental ‘Living’ House, ‘The OME’

We are now seeking to appoint a highly committed, motivated and creative scientist to join the research team under ‘Microbial Environments’ theme. The research will see development of techniques to sense, predict and then modulate bacterial communities using bacteriophages in a built environment setting. The post is a fixed term for 36 months. The successful candidate will work closely with computational biologists, microbial ecologists, architects, material scientists and civil engineers.

You should hold, or being close to completion of a PhD in phage biology/therapy, microbiology, microbial ecology, molecular biology or related subject. You should work well independently but become an important member of a multidisciplinary team. Excellent communication and organization skills are essential.

We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part-time working or other flexible working arrangements.

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Dr Darren Smith on 0191 243 7730 or by email at darren.smith@northumbria.ac.uk.
