Job description

One year of funding full-time for a midwife to undertake an MRes (with potential to progress to PhD)

Title: Student midwives' experiences of factors within midwifery curriculum that facilitate or inhibit their effectiveness to work within the new 'best start' model of maternity care: a mixed methods action research study

Based within the SHSC at Edinburgh Napier University
Funding GBP 12,000 + fees paid for 1 year

This exciting proposal will provide a midwife who is interested in curriculum development and its approach towards preparing midwives to work in a continuity of care model with the opportunity to undertake an MRes over a one-year time-period. Upon completion of this MRes, opportunity to progress towards PhD maybe considered an option. Completion of this research study is intended to develop understanding of most advantageous curriculum strategies to prepare student midwives for optimal working within a 'best start' maternity care team.

Background

The Scottish Government 'best start' five year forward plan for maternity and neonatal services, sets out a program of transformational change to the way maternity services are delivered in Scotland (UK). In response to this dramatic shift in style of maternity care provision, it is essential that universities appropriately prepare student midwives for placements within the new 'best start' teams, with curriculum conveying appropriate education at fitting time points to facilitate development of relevant contemporary evidence-based midwifery skills. A mixed methods approach involving a survey with both quantitative and qualitative elements and focus groups will be held with midwifery students, midwifery lecturers, and midwives currently working within 'best start' teams. This MRes will undertake the first cycle of an action research project, with potential to progress to PhD through implementation of changes and re-evaluation at two further time points.

Pre-requisite for applicants:

  • Registered Midwife
  • Based in Lothian Region
  • WTE 37.5 hours per week
  • Registering for 1 year full-time Masters in Research (MRes)
