A Research Associate position is available on a MRC funded project to create and characterise novel human cellular disease model systems of β- and α-thalassemia syndromes and of sickle cell disease.

The project will utilise our recently developed immortalised erythroid line BEL-A that recapitulates erythropoiesis, along with CRISPR genome editing to create sublines with a range of globin gene mutations introduced recapitulating disease phenotypes. The lines will be extensively characterised both to validate disease phenotype and to provide a data resource.

The position is open to candidates who have a PhD in Biochemistry, Cell Biology or related discipline. Experience of designing components for and performing CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing and cell culture and analysis of erythroid cell lines and primary cells are essential, with other techniques including lentiviral transduction, multiplex flow cytometry, qPCR, gel electrophoresis required for the project.

For informal enquiries please contact Professor Jan Frayne on tel: +44 (0)117 331 2127 or email: Jan.frayne@bristol.ac.uk.
