Overview:

The Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) has received a multi-year academic donation from Microsoft to support research on a range of cloud-related legal and regulatory issues (the ‘Cloud Legal Project’) as well as additional funding for collaborative work on cloud computing which we are undertaking with the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory (the ‘Microsoft Cloud Computing Research Centre’).

In connection with these CCLS is seeking to expand its established cloud legal research team by appointing an additional Research Assistant on a fixed-term contract for 24 months.

The post holder will work flexibly across the projects as directed. Examples of current and anticipated research topics are legal and regulatory aspects of cloud contracts, blockchain, cloud robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, cloud localisation requirements, the use of cloud computing in regulated sectors such as financial services and healthcare, cybersecurity, inconsistencies in the treatment of assets offline and in the cloud, and the implications for cloud computing of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Over the past decade the team has published articles, presented at conferences, and provided input to legislative and regulatory consultations on a broad range of cloud-related topics, including many aspects of cloud contracts, cloud privacy policies, law enforcement access to cloud data, cloud localisation requirements, cloud standards, and consumer protection in the cloud.

The post holder will undertake research investigations, produce and disseminate research outputs in collaboration with and under the supervision of Professors Christopher Millard, Ian Walden and Chris Reed in order to further the objectives of the Cloud Legal Project and the Microsoft Cloud Computing Research Centre.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate strong research skills, excellent writing and editing skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. 

The salary will be in the range £31,054-£39,483 pro rata per annum, inclusive of London Allowance, and the post is available immediately. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, a pension scheme and an interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
