Centre for Cancer Prevention

The Centre for Cancer Prevention is at the forefront of research internationally into the prevention and control of cancer. We have particularly active programmes of research studying breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer prevention, cancer screening and statistical methods for clinical trials and epidemiology.

Applications are invited for a Scientific Officer position. This role holder will participate in research-based projects under the direction of the Laboratory Manager. Current research activities include viral (Human Papillomavirus, HPV) and human DNA methylation testing, HPV testing, as well as biomarker discovery and validation for cancer prevention through next generation sequencing.

Applicants must have a degree in biological science or equivalent. The post-holder must have a few years of wet lab experience and be able to use standard laboratory equipment. In addition, the applicant will need to have a thorough understanding of Good Clinical and laboratory practice. Experience of library preparation for NGS and of handling clinical samples would be an advantage.

The applicant must be team oriented as well as being able to work independently. The post-holder will also carry out some administrative work to support research activity and should be a systematic and organised person with good computing skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

The post is full time and fixed term until 31 March 2020. Starting salary will be in the range £27,251-£33,615 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and pension scheme.

Please note that it will not be possible for QMUL to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for successful candidates as this role does not fall into one of the standard occupational codes deemed eligible for sponsorship by UK Visas and Immigration. Successful candidates will therefore need to be eligible to work in the UK or have limited leave to remain in the UK and associated right to work for the duration of their employment with QMUL, in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. The Centre for Cancer Prevention requires applicants to provide all certificates at interview to confirm their qualifications (as specified in the Job Description).
