The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a global centre for research and teaching, consistently ranked among the 40 best universities in the world – and top 20 public universities. The University opened its Okanagan campus in 2005 as a bold new UBC presence in the interior of British Columbia, designed to deliver on the promise of a research-intensive institution purpose-built for the 21st century.
Over the past 14 years, UBC’s Okanagan campus has developed a distinctive learning community earning national and international recognition for excellence in research and teaching. The campus is home to approximately 9,900 undergraduate and graduate students, 620 faculty members, 630 staff, and 8 Faculties and Schools. With approximately $25 million in annual research funding, the Okanagan campus is establishing itself as an important centre of learning and research and as a driver of economic and social development in the Interior of BC.
Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, UBC Okanagan, the Dean, College of Graduate Studies, is responsible for providing leadership for graduate education at UBC’s Okanagan campus, including long-term strategic planning, academic development, and collaboration with the Faculties. The Dean will establish and enhance relationships with the Vancouver campus, university Vice Presidents and Deans, among others, and other internal and external stakeholders as appropriate. The recently released long-term vision for the Okanagan campus – “Outlook 2040” – sets out a plan that would see graduate student enrolment triple to 3,000 and annual research income rise to $100 million. The Dean of Graduate Studies will play a critical role in realizing this vision.
The ideal candidate is an accomplished academic with leadership experience at a research-intensive university. With a demonstrated commitment to graduate students, programs and research, the ideal candidate will have a personal depth of experience in research and supervision of graduate students and a strong interest in the graduate student experience. The new Dean will be eligible to be appointed as a full professor at the University of British Columbia.
This role represents an outstanding opportunity to bring vision and energy to a leadership position at a young campus of one of the world’s top universities — one that is vibrant, dynamic, globally connected and engaged with its local community and partners.
