Job Summary

We are seeking a Research Scientist with expertise in atmospheric inverse modeling and biogeochemical models to collaborate with other group members and external collaborators to address key science questions in the field of global carbon cycle, with a particular focus on the methane budget.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will work on the following tasks:

  • Apply scientific knowledge to analyze satellite retrieval products, validate against independent observations, and develop bias correction schemes.
  • Design and implement Bayesian atmospheric inversion routines to estimate global and regional scale fluxes of methane and other greenhouse gases.
  • Analyze decadal changes of methane fluxes and identify underlying drivers using multiple datasets and novel approaches.
  • Write scientific publications and present research results at domestic and international conferences.
  • Contribute as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team within the institute and with external academic partners to address key science topics. Provide guidance to research personnel and graduate students.
  • Develop research ideas independently, plan and organize research projects, and contribute to writing of proposals to federal and non-federal agencies.

Basic Qualifications

  • M.S. in Geophysics, Atmospheric Science, Physics, or related scientific field.
  • Expertise in data assimilation theory and application to develop sophisticated inversion scheme.
  • Expertise in terrestrial and atmospheric transport models to quantify regional and global scale fluxes.
  • Expertise processing and analyzing large datasets of remotely sensed atmospheric composition and vegetation properties.
  • Applicants should have demonstrated skills in scientific programming, statistical analysis, scientific writing, and data visualization and have at least 5 years of related experience beyond their M.S.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Geophysics, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, or related scientific field.
  • Experience in the use and development of atmospheric chemistry transport and/or terrestrial models.
  • Excellent oral (including public speaking) and written communication skills.
  • A successful publication record.
  • Strong interest in working with scientists and other staff in a highly collaborative project environment.
