About the position

Department of Computer Science (IDI) in Gjøvik invites applications for 3-year full time PhD/Early Stage Researcher position in Computer Science. The position will be based at the Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory.

The recruited researcher will work in a high-level international research environment within the ColourLab, at the premises of NTNU in Gjøvik.
The PhD is not subject to applied project constraints and would be a very good support for an independent student who wants to develop fundamental research with us. The topic is SNOW IMAGING, we welcome research proposals based on any fundamental aspects of this concept. The research proposal will weight strongly in the selection of the successful applicant.

Main duties and responsibilities

The candidate is expected to develop scientific research towards the fundamental understanding of scenes covered by snow and their appearance, the measurement of snow properties and the optical modeling of snow, from an imaging perspective. 
In the project, the candidate will investigate one or several related aspects, which could be considered from the points of view of the following fields:

  •  Physics (modeling or measuring optical or/and mechanical properties of snow);
  •  Computer and Information Science (snow in computer graphics or in teledetection);

This project focuses on fundamental methods and not on a specific application. Several applications would build up on this research, in the field of environment, tourism, entertainment, automotive, security, art, etc.

The period of employment for the position is 3 years. All successful candidates must be able to secure a residence and work permit in Norway.

Qualification requirements

PhD candidate:

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in the field of colour imaging, optical models, computer graphics, or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

  • Required: Experience with Optical models, Instrumentation or Computer Graphics; Proficiency in Matlab, C++, Python, or other programming environment
  • Experience with statistical analysis, signal processing, and visualization is welcomed
  • Good written and oral English language skills. Candidates who have completed their Master degree in an institution where English is not the language of instruction should present proof of English proficiency (e.g. one of the following Secure English Language Test (SELT) results as follows: -TOEFL Internet-Based (iBT) – minimum 95 with a writing score of at least 24. -Academic IELTS – minimum 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each element. -Advanced Cambridge Certificate at grade C or better. The test results must not be older than 24 months on the date of the application deadline)

Selection criteria:

  • The candidate should possess a sound working knowledge of quantitative & qualitative research methods, experimental design, programming and communication skills
  • Quality of the candidate assessed through the candidate’s academic merit and relevant professional experience
  • The research proposal will weight strongly in the selection of the successful applicant. Only candidates that send a research proposal will be considered
  • Incomplete applications will not be evaluated

Salary and conditions

PhD candidate:

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 456 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years without required duties. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Computer Science,  https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phdcs

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
