DEAN, FACULTY OF LAW

For over 48 years, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) has taken pride in providing an excellent education to students with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives who are at various stages of their learning journey. TRU is a comprehensive, learner-centered, environmentally responsible institution that serves its regional, national, and international learners and their communities through high quality and flexible education, training, research and scholarship. From traditional academics to trades, from certificates to graduate degrees, TRU offers students choice from over 140 on-campus programs and 50 Open Learning programs. More than 28,500 students study on campuses in Kamloops and Williams Lake and in regional centres throughout the Interior, or in distance or online courses and programs through Open Learning. Research, creation and innovation thrive in TRU’s open, flexible learning environment.

The Faculty of Law infuses the classic tradition of law and a legal education with a modern, innovative approach. The three-year JD Program offers students a well-established curriculum and the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of initiatives, including award winning competitive mooting, an international law journal, international exchanges and student-run groups and activities. With approximately 30 full-time and sessional faculty members, the Faculty is committed to student success and ensuring that students are provided with every opportunity to succeed as future legal professionals.

As the Faculty’s chief academic and administrative officer, the Dean is responsible to the Provost and Vice-President Academic for providing dynamic and visionary leadership in the articulation and implementation of the Faculty’s evolving strategic plan for professional and career development, education, scholarship and outreach in alignment with TRU’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities. As an accomplished teacher, researcher and practitioner, the Dean will possess an open, transparent and collegial style of leadership with the ability to collaborate with colleagues to plan the Faculty’s future.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communications skills, be able to demonstrate knowledge of trends and current issues in legal education across diverse settings, and have a record of advocacy, service innovation, scholarly engagement and service to the profession. S/he will have an outstanding academic record, a strong and a deep appreciation for research, teaching and service, and demonstrated experience as an inspirational leader and mentor. A Master of Laws or an equivalent combination of educational and professional experience is required.

Thompson Rivers University is strongly committed to fostering diversity within our community. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our staff, our faculty and its scholarship including, but not limited to, women, visible minorities, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. Please note that all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, applications from Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
