At TU Dresden, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Hydro Sciences, the Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology invites applications for the

Chair (W3) of Meteorology

to be filled at 01.10.2020.

The position holder is required to represent the area of Meteorology in both research and teaching. The research of the Chair of Meteorology focuses on the processes of surface-atmosphere-interaction and their functions in the energy, water and carbon cycle; the regional climate as part of the global climate system and local climate adaptation; as well as effects of the urban and natural environment on the local climate, human and vegetation. Future research at the Chair of Meteorology will require a vision on the combination of long-term flux measurements with complex field campaigns. It should also include model development, such as for Community Land Model (CLM), Large Eddy Simulation (LES), boundary layer models and mesoscale climate models. Your vision will further strengthen the profile of the Chair of Meteorology in national and international research and observation networks such as ICOS. The holder of the position shall co-operate on topics related to integrated water resources management with the Dresden-based Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and Resources (UNU-FLORES) of the United Nations University. The teaching load includes courses in the university’s bachelor and master programs (e.g. Hydrology, Water Management, Geography, Forest science and Landscape architecture) with a special emphasis on fundamentals and applied aspects of Climate and Meteorology. The responsibilities also include the coordination and development of the international DAAD-funded study „Hydro Science and Engineering“ and the cooperation within the ERASMUS-Mundus studies „FloodRiskMaster“ and „Groundwatch“. Participation in courses for CIPSEM (Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management) and in academic self-administration is expected.

We seek to appoint an expert with a proven track record in one or several of the following fields:

  • microscale and mesoscale meteorological processes,
  • coupling mechanisms between vegetation and atmospheric boundary layer,
  • meteorological instruments and methods of observation.

Special attention will be paid to the capability for interdisciplinary co-operation, which is of outstanding significance for the joint research in the Center for Advanced Water Research (CAWR) - a co-operation between the water competences at TU Dresden and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ. The candidate is required to have substantial experience in research and teaching and to have a proven record of first-class publications in one or several of the mentioned fields. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding and project management and leadership are expected. The skills for conducting lectures in the English language are required. The responsibilities also include contribution to the joint cooperation with partners in science, development cooperation, private sector and politics and active development of corresponding projects in the future. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG).
