The Department of Pediatrics, New Born Screening program is seeking a Community Liaison (SSRP1) to act as a point of contact for communities and educate families, medical providers and organizations about the State-mandated Newborn Screening. The incumbent is expected to design effective presentations and programs to increase awareness and participation, as well as assist in the development of education materials for print and web media. The Community Liaison will also advocate for families by assisting with access to resources and services.

Duties include:

  • Will communicate with families and organizations to stress importance of Newborn Screening, as well as coordinate resources and services to improve understanding of and participation in program.
  • Incumbent independently assists families with access to care, insurance coverage, transportation and translation. Expected to contact medical providers to instruct need for correction of errors or omissions on test request forms. Contacts parents to discuss the need for newborn screening tests.
  • Provide follow-up of early and inadequate specimens and out-of-hospital births, including tracking and reporting rates. Collaborate with Public Health department and local healthcare providers to locate and serve families. Contact providers with instructions for corrections or need to repeat newborn screening, which ever applies. 
  • Assist professional program staff and Program Director in preparation of State reports and educational programs. Communicate with State and other Newborn Screening Community Liaisons, as well as attend meetings.
  • Prepares newsletter materials for quarterly communications with hospital/providers. Also prepares site-visit presentation materials and educational programs including the development of educational materials for print and web media.
  • Support program professional staff with scheduling and coordinating hospital site-visits to ensure room and audio-visual equipment are available/setup in advance.
  • Train Administrative Associate to assist with tasks as needed.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in health-related field and 1 – 2 years of related experience required, including patient education directed toward families from diverse cultural backgrounds and families of children with chronic health conditions.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (both oral and written) with cultural sensitivity.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
  • Must be able to travel within region and to occasional meetings.
  • Computer skill including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher highly preferred.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field. 
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with human study participants

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

  • Must possess a valid CA driver’s license with clean driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, and operates foot and/or hand controls.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be required to work non-standard, extended or weekend hours in support of research work.
