Construction is underway for a new research complex to serve as the home base for two interdisciplinary institutes, Stanford ChEM-H (Chemistry, Engineering, and Medicine for Human Health) and the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. The 235,000 square foot complex will be home to more than 40 laboratories, interactive research spaces, meeting spaces, and a pub.
This new, shared facility is located at the strategic physical nexus of science, engineering, and medicine. This modern complex will offer a convening, collaborative “hub” to expand work in brain science and molecular approaches to health, which will rapidly advance Stanford’s potential for discovery and dissemination of new knowledge.
Under general supervision, provide technical support to end-users for computer hardware, software, and network related problems.
- Diagnose and resolve end-user problems; respond to escalated issues from clients and other support teams; perform triage, provide remote problem resolution when possible, refer problems to associated groups.
- Manages computing support through a matrix organization of support teams from multiple schools, University IT services and administrative systems.
- Research, recommend and implement hardware and software purchases and configurations to meet client needs and ensure compatibility with university systems and architecture.
- Provide computing, network and information security support for complex and highly specialized scientific instrumentation, working in conjunction with faculty owners and instrument vendors.
- Provide consultation on data management, storage and best practices, including research computing and data storage services offered by University IT.
- Investigate and test new tools, systems, techniques, and software products.
- Provide technical guidance and training; may guide other staff.
- Work on projects requiring expertise and creativity in analysis and deployment of technology.
- Act as local network administrator for ChEM-H / Neuro research complex networks.
- Support audiovisual systems in the research complex meeting spaces (multipurpose room, seminar room, conference rooms, breakout spaces), working with facilities operations staff and vendors.
- May perform routine server administration.
- May perform metrics trend analysis and reporting; guiding resultant process improvement.
Other duties may also be assigned.
Education and Experience
Two-year college degree and two or more years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. Four-year college degree and 5 years of experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to provide excellent client service.
- Ability to apply diagnostic techniques for problem troubleshooting.
- Ability to lead projects requiring technical expertise and creativity in analysis and deployment of technology.\
- Ability to apply information technology best practices, including security (this includes information security or physical security, such as asset management) to problem resolution and troubleshooting.
- Experience in providing computing support for complex scientific instrumentation and research data management strongly desired.
Certificates and Licenses
- Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Frequently sitting, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, bending, lifting, standing, and carrying equipment.
- Occasionally lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21-40 pounds.
- Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, grasp forcefully.
