Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Department of Forest Biomaterials is part of NC State University’s College of Natural Resources and offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs in Sustainable Materials and Technology and in Paper Science and Engineering. We are located in Raleigh, North Carolina, and our activities include teaching, research, extension programming, continuing education, and technical services that benefit the forest products, housing, biomaterials, paper and pulp, and bioenergy industries.

Essential Job Duties

The successful candidates will demonstrate a capacity for conducting unique creative work that emphasizes sustainable product design pursued through technological, environmental, and/or economic innovation, application of design principles, and/or the equitable distribution of resources (natural, man-made, and cultural).

The appointee is expected to assume a leadership role at NCSU in developing new directions in sustainable industrial/product design. In addition to the activities described above, the appointee will teach in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and collaboratively participate in the activities, service, and life of the department, university, and the broader academic, professional, commercial and/or public communities. Successful candidates will demonstrate an ability to teach a combination of practice-based studio classes and large lecture courses.

Additional desirable skills and experience include (i) the ability to obtain extramural funding and relationships with industry and/or communities, and (ii) a demonstrable history of innovation, especially in the advancement of sustainable industrial/product design.

Minimum Education/Experience

• PhD or terminal degree in industrial design, industrial engineering, wood products, mechanical engineering or related field. 
• Relevant background for teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Capacity to design products using sustainable materials and technologies.
• Ability to operate and supervise the use of equipment typically found in modern fabrication shops including routers, lathes, saws, etc.
