PhD Research Fellowship in Cell Biology/Cellular Immunology
Position as PhD Research Fellow in Cell Biology/Cellular Immunology available at the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo. The project is a collaboration between the Section for Physiology and Cell Biology (FYSCELL) and the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES).
The candidate for this position will work towards the identification and characterization of new molecules and pathways regulating the intracellular traffic of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC II) molecules leading to antigen presentation. The project will also have emphasis on the study of antigen loading and presentation in codfishes, which lack MHC II and the MHC II pathway and thus, do not harbour this part of the specific immune system. This project uses cutting-edge technology including live cell imaging, mRNA sequencing, bioinformatics and proteomics.
Most of the laboratory work of this project is located at the research groups of Associate Professor Cinzia Progida and Professor Oddmund Bakke, at the Section for Physiology and Cell Biology (FysCell), Department of Biosciences, UiO. mRNA sequencing and bioinformatic analyses will be carried out under the supervision of Dr. Sissel Jentoft and researchers at the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES), Department of Biosciences, UiO. The project will be conducted in collaboration with international groups and involves potential research stay abroad for the Research Fellow.
The Department of Biosciences harbors the Eurobioimaging Advanced imaging node NorMIC Oslo with access to a wide range of the latest imaging equipment and methods, an EM-lab, the Norwegian Sequencing Centre (NSC) and Proteomics services.
More about the position
The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, or for a period of 4 years with 25 % compulsory work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department.

- Master’s degree or equivalent in cell or molecular biology
- Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
- Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30.06.2019 to complete the final exam
Experience with eukaryotic cell cultures microscopy techniques and/or transcriptomic analyses will be considered an advantage
The norm is as follows:
- The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
- The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
- The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
