JOB PURPOSE

Stanford University Libraries is seeking an enthusiastic and talented software engineer to support discovery, access, and delivery as part of its digital library, an internationally recognized technology program developing innovative solutions to advance teaching, learning and research at one of the world’s leading universities. This position will contribute to the development of interfaces, tools and software to enable online discovery and access to the collections and services of Stanford Libraries. Developing, using and implementing open standards and open source software is an explicit objective of the position.

Regular tasks will include programming, analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, modifying, and maintaining computer programs in systems of moderate size and complexity or segments of larger systems, and contributing to all phases of a team-oriented development projects, including systems analysis, program design, development, implementation, and support. 

This position is part of the Access Team within Digital Library Systems and Services, and is based on the main Stanford campus, reporting to the Assistant Director for Digital Strategy and Access, DLSS.

CORE DUTIES

  • Assess user needs and requirements. 
  • Design and develop applications that may involve sophisticated data manipulation. 
  • Maintain and update existing programs.
  • Troubleshoot and solve technical problems.
  • Create programs to meet reporting and analysis needs.
  • Document changes in software for end users. 
  • Follow team software development methodology. 
  • Serve as technical resource with respect to applications.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience may include:
    • Demonstrated experience with developing library discovery and access environments, including library catalogs, library websites, and digital collections desired. 
    • Prior experience with development using the International Image Interoperability Framework desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Current knowledge of latest software and design standards.
  • Ability to define and solve logical problems for technical applications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
  • Ability to recognize and recommend needed changes in user and/or operations procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of software engineering principles.
  • Strong knowledge of at least one programming language, such as Ruby and JavaScript.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand.
  • Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • May work extended hours, evening and weekends for both project-based work and/or regular, on call operational support.
