Position Summary

The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Office of Academic Affairs invites applications for a position of Learning Society Chief for the Shared Discovery Curriculum. In 2016, the College of Human Medicine (CHM) implemented an innovative new curriculum, envisioned to be responsive to the needs of students and faculty in a new technological era and a new medical landscape. This new curriculum, the Shared Discovery Curriculum, provides integrated content organized around patient complaints and concerns. It is an experience-based curriculum where medical students learn by doing.

As part of the implementation, the college has created learning societies to provide medical students with a personal and supportive learning environment. All students are members of one of four learning societies: Jane Addams, John Dewey, Justin Morrill and Daniel Hale Williams. Learning societies are subdivided into small groups of eight students, and it is within these scholar groups that students debrief their clinic experiences and participate in case-based learning with their faculty fellow. A Chief leads each learning society and oversees the fellows within that learning society. A curriculum assistant supports each learning society and Chief. The learning societies and Academy are the responsibility of the Director of the CHM Academy.

Reporting to the Director of the CHM Academy, the Chief is responsible for implementation and management of the programs and policies of the CHM Academy, including:

working with the Academy Director in the assignment and supervision of learning society faculty fellows;
consulting and advising with faculty fellows in support of their work;
participating in evaluation of the learning society faculty fellows, including peer-review of teaching and monitoring student ratings of faculty fellow performance;
leading and collaborating on faculty development of learning society faculty fellows;
teaching as a member of the CHM Academy in the role of a faculty fellow;
assuring comparability across campuses of educational experiences for students and faculty fellows;
reviewing student performance indicators and working with fellows as needed to identify academic and personal support resources for students;
acting as the point person for the Course director when concerns about a student arise;
participating in academic scholarship.

The Chief serves as a learning society fellow in addition to these leadership responsibilities. The position will collaborate with Shared Discover Curriculum leadership and the Learning Society leadership. In addition, the Chief will participate in on-going curriculum evaluation and improvement; management of the learning societies’ budget, and participation in accreditation efforts.

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate will have a terminal degree including MD, PhD or equivalent; teaching experience with multiple educational modalities; experience with faculty development design and implementation; experience working with faculty teams; and demonstrated effectiveness working with students at a variety of performance levels. In addition, experience in any of the following areas is desirable: curriculum design, learner assessment, and program evaluation; program level management; experience in medical education scholarship; and demonstrated collaborative approach to academic governance. Academic department and rank will be determined based upon qualifications and experience.
