The Cardiac Cath Lab at Duke University Hospital is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.
High volume cardiac catheterization center. Our interventional cardiologists perform more than 3,000 interventional cardiac catheterizations each year. Duke Hospital performs the most innovative procedures such as placement of mitral clips and TAVR. There are five catheterization labs at Duke Hospital and an additional two hybrid OR rooms, with another two catheterization labs at both Duke Regional and Duke Raleigh Hospitals.
Work Hours & Shifts:
Full Time: Four 10-hour day shifts per week.
A rotating schedule allows employees a four-day weekend once a month. Applicants must meet the on-call requirement which includes a 30-minute travel time to Duke Hospital.
Assists physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and cardiac arrhythmias in the Cath/EP Lab specializing in the care of patients undergoing PTCA, stent placement, IABP placement and EP devices and ablations. With increased experience provides resource and mentoring to new staff while exhibiting enhanced technical skills.
Assist the physician during invasive and noninvasive procedures to treat cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and cardiac arrhythmias. Maintain high standards to achieve quality patient care. Communicates continuously with the physician about the patient’s condition. May perform any of the following: Basic diagnostic catheterization procedures on adult patients with known and suspected congenital and acquired cardiac and peripheral vascular disease. Basic interventional procedures which may include any of the following: PTCA, stent prep and placement, IABP placement and operation. Basic EP procedure may include any of the following; EP studies, implantation of pacemaker, ICD, BIV ICD and ablations.
Procedural requirements: Room preparation and breakdown to include stocking rooms, daily QC checks, radiographic, hemodynamic and computer setup, and room cleanup. Prepare sterile procedure tray and patient sterile field appropriately for specified procedure type. Evaluate the status of the patient during the procedure; provide age and gender specific care, prep access site according to lab standard practice, and perform EKG lead placement, blood pressure and pulse oximetry setup for hemodynamic monitoring. Acquire and accurately document pertinent patient data in the electronic health record and enter into hemodynamic and X-ray systems. Operates all physiologic and radiographic equipment safety and correctly. Assesses procedure room for equipment functioning and readiness.
Obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of the Cardiac Cath Laboratory team are met. Observe occupational and radiation safety regulations (wearing badges, lead aprons, goggles, gloves). Educate the patient of procedure expectations before, during and after the procedure including post-procedural limitations and restrictions. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Documented competency in interpretation of EKG Demonstrates mastery of varied procedures within the procedural area (either invasive or EP Focus) Ability to communication with patients, physicians, healthcare team.

A graduate of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate academic program in health science (including, but not limited to, cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, or nursing)
Must have documented competency in interpretation of EKG and hemodynamics. Cardiac Catheterization or Electrophysiology Lab experience preferred. Allied health professional experience in cardiology preferred.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
RCIS, RCES, or IBHRE certification within 24 months of hire and remains in active status Basic Life Support Certification required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification required within 6 months of employmentof employment
