The Faculty of Science at UNSW is resourcing for two School Managers. You will be asked in your application process to identify which role you would like to be considered for.

One is for the School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences (BABS).

One is for the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences (BEES). This is a 12-month maternity leave cover position.

The School of BABS teaches approximately 700 full-time student equivalents, and has 33 academics, 31 postdoctoral research associates or fellows, approximately 20 other research staff, 152 higher degree research students, 8 technical officers and 8 administrative staff.

The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) examines the natural environment, including life, from the core of the Earth to its upper atmosphere, deep in time through to the present and modelling towards the future. The School of BEES has over 100 academic staff, 170 research students, 60 honours students, and a team of 15 technical and administrative staff members

Both roles are accountable for overseeing business operations of the School, including financial management, human resources, physical resources, student support services and WH&S. In addition, the School Managers will act as a change champions for the Faculty whilst we deliver on our 2025 strategy. Each school has an operating budget of approximately $11m annually.

The positions are also part of the Faculty Administrative Management team, led by the Faculty Executive Director (FED) and contribute to and at times lead the development and implementation of Faculty-wide policy, procedures and systems in line with University directions and requirements.

About the roles:

BABS:

  • $124K-$ - 131K plus 17% superannuation and leave loading
  • Continuing
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

BEES:

  • $124K-$ - 131K plus 9.5% superannuation and leave loading
  • Fixed term – 12 months (MAT Leave Cover)
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

Both School Manager roles report to their respective Heads of School (BABS/BEES) with a dotted line to the FED and is responsible for all School technical and professional staff.

Specific responsibilities for these roles include:

  • Work with the FED and Head of School (HoS) to advance, develop, evaluate and maintain teaching and research strategies that align with the Faculty’s mission, and provide strategic management advice to the HoS on the full range of School activities, planning and performance
  • Provide operational leadership and expert, strategic advice in the day to day running of the School and provide leadership during times of change as we deliver our 2025 strategy
  • With the HoS, plan, manage and allocate human, physical and financial resources to deliver School services in all functional areas e.g. teaching and learning, research and research training and administration
  • Consistent with Faculty and University strategy, policies and processes, manage, advise and report on a range of functional areas concerning: financial management, human resources, facilities and physical resources, records and information systems, communications and marketing, and student administration
  • Work with appropriate business partners across operational areas to ensure the effective management of the School including: financial management, human resource, school facilities and space, marketing and student support, teaching and research, and any other areas as required
  • Represent the School on committees and provide leadership on special projects as required
  • Consult, liaise and negotiate with internal and external stakeholder groups and institutions primarily on School operational matters
  • Manage the provision of general administrative services to students in support of their academic pursuits
  • Oversee support and advice to academic staff on matters of academic administration and process and assist in providing School responses on student matters as required
  • Oversee the planning for, and maintenance of, equipment, facilities and assets in line with UNSW and Faculty policy and guidelines
  • Provide advice, support and coaching to other School Managers within the faculty as required and appropriate
  • Implement the UNSW Health and safety management system within your area of responsibility

About the successful applicant

To be successful in these roles you will have:

  • Relevant degree and extensive relevant management experience or equivalent competency gained through another combination of education, training and experience
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated high level interpersonal skills
  • Excellent consultation, influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders
  • Extensive experience managing, coaching and developing staff
  • Strong initiative and superior analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in financial management and proven ability to interpret financial data to provide strategic advice
  • Proven skills and experience in strategic and resource planning, goal setting and project management
  • Substantial experience in business improvement activities and leading change activities
  • Ability and capacity to direct and monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the safety management system.
