About the opportunity
From the appointment of its first Chair in 1918, the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning has been an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, attracting the highest quality applicants in Australia. Founded in 1968 as the Computer Applications Research Unit, the Design Lab has for decades been an international research leader in how computers can be used to design and create. In the 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject, the School was first in Australia, and ranked 15th in the world for Architecture/Built Environment.
The School is focused on the built environment and uses the methods of architecture, design, planning, science, art, engineering, computing, and social sciences to analyse, understand and design innovative environments. We have one of Australia’s best university laboratory infrastructures for research and design in the built environment, including our Lighting Lab, Spatial Audio and Acoustics Lab, and the Indoor Environmental Quality Lab. We have a major and ongoing investment in the Design Modelling and Fabrication Lab, including architectural robotics.
The Postdoctoral Research Associates in Design Innovation will report to the Chair of Design Innovation, and assist in the development and management of a portfolio of multidisciplinary and collaborative research projects in design innovation. We are particularly seeking candidates whose own research experience and capabilities will complement and extend the school’s existing and emerging strengths in design innovation.
You’ll have the opportunity to undertake important externally funded work and develop your academic career alongside experts in the field, for these roles your research will be directed towards specific projects so you will be pursuing a collaborative School led (rather than self-directed) research agenda.
The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance in recruiting talent aligned to these values in the pursuit of research excellence. We are looking for Postdoctoral Research Associates in Design Innovation who possess:
- a PhD in design and/or innovation, or a cognate field (awarded prior to commencement of the position);
- skills in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods, and various analysis techniques
- evidence of the ability to conduct independent and collaborative research and assume responsibility for the development and completion of research projects,
- an emerging track record in academic publications (relative to opportunity) and the potential to develop further research expertise through various projects;
- a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and across disciplines
- excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
Experience in the design and/or technology industries in your research and/or teaching would also be of interest.
Since our inception 160 years ago, the University of Sydney has led to improve the world around us. We believe in education for all and that effective leadership makes lives better.
