Job Summary

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) in the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan seeks Applications Programmer Associates to join its Computing and Network Services (CNS) team. Candidates will participate in ICPSR’s information and technology efforts to provide state-of-the-art services to a growing internal and external user community of social science researchers, students, instructors, and policymakers. CNS’s core activities include network services, desktop support, and software development.

ICPSR is an international consortium of more than 775 academic institutions and research organizations. ICPSR’s mission includes maintaining the world’s largest social science data archive, acting as a global leader in data stewardship and data science, and carrying out a range of educational activities. ICPSR has 15 research faculty and 95 professional staff.

Responsibilities*

ICPSR is looking to hire Application Programmer Associates to join its Computing & Network Services (CNS) team. Successful candidates will be part of an energetic, highly skilled professional software development team building the next generation digital assets management platform for political and social sciences research data. Candidates will be primarily responsible for coding new software components following Agile software development methodology. Work involves building web systems for users to interact with metadata repositories, databases and search engines under the guidance of senior developers.

Required Qualifications*

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in computer science or 2 to 3 years of academic or professional programming experience developing web applications using Java. Good understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript is required. Job requires good analytical and problem solving skills to understand and translate user requirements into technical system specifications. Candidates must have good communication and collaboration skills.

Desired Qualifications*

Prior experience or understanding of search technologies like Apache Solr, or ElasticSearch is desired but not required. Experience developing RESTful Application Programming Interfaces is preferred.

Additional Information

NOTE: This is a two-year fixed term appointment.

Salary Range is $55,000-$65,000/year, commensurate with experience.
