General Description:

The Financial Analyst is responsible for the budget and fiscal oversight and management of accounts for the over 350 student organizations that fall under Homewood Student Affairs (HSA) and will report to the HSA Director of Finance,.These student organizations include volunteer groups, sports clubs, and Student Activities Commission (SAC) groups, including charter, fraternity and sorority life, and diversity and inclusion groups. The role will support the development of the annual budget and allocations for student organizations, develop sound fiscal policies and practices, oversee many accounting and reporting processes, and educate student organization treasurers and advisors on budget management. The position will also work closely with the Director of Student Leadership and Involvement as well as other financial staff across the division.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Oversight and Recordkeeping

  • Monitor the revenue and expenses for over 350 student organizations
  • Reconcile accounts through an annual audit of over 350 student organization accounts, this includes but is not limited to, analyzing income and expenses, conducting investigations, assembling data, and preparing projections and reports
  • Oversee and manage financial requests submitted by students and advisors
  • Work collaboratively with Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Purchasing to resolve student account issues
  • Manage and monitor funding sources which include Parents Fund, HSA general funds, and other gift accounts. Ensure use of funds is in line with any donor restrictions
  • Work with staff, students and advisors to ensure policies and procedures are explained and followed
  • Work with student organization treasurers and advisors to develop strategies for resolving any existing or projected deficits
  • Prepare and reconcile monthly and internal reports
  • Consult with staff regarding routine balance and budget inquiries
  • Oversee the student organization account list, create new accounts and close defunct organization accounts

Planning and Compliance 

  • Partner with HSA leadership and finance staff to develop fiscal policies and practices for student organizations that are clear, consistent and in line with university and regulatory policies and guidelines
  • Lead the development of the annual budget plan and allocations for student organizations and present the proposed plan to senior leaders for review and approval
  • Develop, implement and ensure robust processes are in place to ensure timely and accurate payment to students for both payroll functions and reimbursements
  • In partnership with finance staff, design and facilitate budget management workshops each semester for student organization treasurers
  • Train student organization advisors on proper submission of forms and documents for reimbursement to students and processing purchasing requests
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with at least three years of experience in budgeting, reporting and analysis
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and accounting skills
  • Strong financial/transactional operations experience
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use discretionary judgment and maintain confidentiality in working with financial and budget information
  • Ability to work with a variety of people (i.e. students, staff, advisors, other university contacts, outside vendors)
  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to work independently
  • Experience working with an accounting system (SAP preferred)
  • Prior experience in a university setting preferred

Role/Level/Range: ATP/03/PC 
Starting Salary Range: $50,200 - $60,000 per year

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
